AAU HOOP: basketball fundamentals summer CAMP FAQS:

The camps are for Boys and Girls in Kindergarten thru 8th grade.

We suggest you register for camp based on the grade your child was in during the Sept. 2022 thru June 2023 school year. However, we DO allow players to play up or down a grade level if it works better with the parent’s schedule.

(For example, "playing up" would include 6th graders participating in a 7th/8th grade camp session. And "playing down" would include current 4th Graders participating in a 2nd/3rd grade camp session).

All grade level camps will be co-ed.

The youth will be put on separate basketball courts designated by the grade level session chosen for the games. They may be separated for some if not all the drills.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What is the camp format for both weeks of camp?

See the table on the left of the page to view the camp format for the specific grade level sessions including start and end times.

What is the camp philosophy?

The summer camps have progressive training with advanced skill development through individualized attention and maximum participation. We aim to create a fun and memorable camp experience whereby players learn more about the game of basketball, become better at it and want to play it more. If players have a great experience it can positively impact their life off the court which is a great result. Players will learn the fundamentals in basketball stations, group lecture mini sessions, team practices, and games.

Over the course of the week players will learn:

  • How to pivot effectively which allows players to see the whole court
  • How to take a shot with the proper fundamental form
  • How to get around the defense with less dribbling
  • Ball handling skills so players of all sizes can move the basketball effectively from one end of the court to the other
  • Defensive principles
  • How to effectively catch and receive a pass using proper handwork and footwork
  • Methods of getting open to take pressure off of the dribbler and to be more effectively involved in the offense
  • Game strategy

How do I register my child for the camp?

Register online at at the home page by clicking the "Summer Camps" button. We suggest you register for camp based on the grade your child was in during the Sept. 2022 thru June 2023 school year. MORE INFORMATION ON PLAYING UP OR DOWN A GRADE LEVEL IS UNDER THE SUBHEADING BELOW TITLED, "Can my child 'play up' or 'play down' a grade level other than the grade they were in during the school year 2022-2023?"

Can I pay by credit card or by check?

You are given the option of paying the $185 participant fee by credit card or personal check during the online registration process. If you choose the check option a mailing address will be provided. Please note, everyone must register for an online account and complete the waiver and medical information questions even if you want to pay by check. The online registration process takes just a few minutes. Once registered, parents will receive AAU HOOP Youth Basketball email communications and any updates. After your payment is received you will receive a confirmation email. Online or check payment must be received in order to guarantee your child's spot in a Grade level camp.

Do I have to complete the online registration process for my child to participate in camp even if I am going to pay by check?

Yes. A parent needs to complete the entire online registration (takes just a few minutes) which includes filling out the Consent and Liability Waiver online as well as answering the question about your child's medical conditions and/or allergies that we should be aware of in order for them to participate in camp. There is no paper form to fill out - everything is now done online.

If I register online and choose the "pay offline" check option but don't mail in the check right away is my child's spot guaranteed?

To be fair to everyone who wants to participate and solidify their plans for the summer, once payment is received your child's spot is officially locked in. So if you register online and choose the "pay offline" option a check payment must be received by August 1st or else the spot will be released. If you pay online with a credit card your child's spot is automatically secured.

Can my child 'play up' or 'play down' a grade level other than the grade they were in during the school year 2022-2023?

Yes. If space is available, parents are given the option of having their child "play up" or "play down" a grade level. Some parents may want to do this if they have more than one child and want them to play together at camp. At a young age level most players are at a beginning level of skill so there is not too much difference in ability when you have a year or less age difference.

Can my child play up or down a grade level?

Yes. Parents can have their child "play up" or "play down" a grade level. So a 5th grader can "play up" at the 6th grade level and a 4th grader can "play down" at the 3rd grade level etc.

What if I have multiple children I would like to enroll for camp and/or 1 child that I want to register for 2 different camp sessions this summer?

If you have multiple children you would like to enroll you will need to register them separately. At the end of the registration process you are given the option to "Register Another Person" and you can select that option for your other child. Furthermore, if you would like your child to enroll in 2 camp sessions this summer please also select "Register Another Person" and complete the process for the other session in which you are interested.

Is there a waitlist?

Yes. There is a CAP on the number of players that can be enrolled for a given Grade level camp. You will be placed on a waitlist if the MAX enrollment has been met for a Grade level camp. In the event a player who has secured a spot at camp decides not to participate then the campers on the WAITLIST will be given the opportunity to join with preference given to the earliest date someone registered.

If the MAX enrollment has been met you will be unable to select that particular camp session during the online registration process. There will also be a WAITLIST option online for all camp sessions that have reached maximum capacity. We suggest you fill out the WAITLIST registration for those seeking a particular camp spot in case someone who previously enrolled decides not to participate.

Some parents will opt to pay by check and if we receive your check payment and the enrollment is already full we will contact you and let you know that your child is on a WAITLIST for the desired camp session. The check will not be cashed until your child is off the WAITLIST and has secured a spot in a given camp session.

What is the Federal Tax-ID number for Childcare Tax credit or Dependent Care reimbursement and address?

AAU Hoop, LLC. Federal Tax ID is 82-3122549

P.O. Box 9572, Niskayuna, NY 12309

Will my child be on a boys or girls team?

All grade levels will be co-ed.

What will my child need to bring to camp?

Players will need appropriate basketball attire such as sneakers, shorts and t-shirt and a water bottle. Players DO NOT need to wear their Summer Camp tee shirt every day. We know it is hard to wash clothes every day so we will have Pinnies for the players to wear during the games. There is no need to bring a basketball.

What is the Early Drop Off or Late Pick Up?

The Early Drop Off for the Morning Session is 9:00 a.m. and the Early Drop Off for the Afternoon Session will be at 12:00 p.m.

Players are welcome to arrive at 9:00 a.m. or 12:00 p.m. for shooting drills prior to the official start of camp with more formal activities that commence at 9:15 a.m. or 12:15 p.m. respectively.

The Morning Session of camp ends at 11:30 a.m. The Afternoon Session of camp ends at 2:30 p.m.

What is the procedure when campers arrive on Day 1 of camp?

There will be a coaches' table on Day 1 of camp to hand out the Basketball Camp tee shirts and check in.

What is the procedure if a camper needs to leave before the camp session ends?

If a camper needs to leave early please put it in writing and email Todd Birmingham, AAU HOOP Basketball Youth League Manager, so we can inform staff and be on the lookout for the parent. He can be reached at youthhoop1@gmail.com.

What is the best method of reaching staff during camp?

Kids are allowed to bring a cell phone but staff are not responsible should it be lost or damaged. Todd Birmingham, AAU Hoop Youth Basketball Manager, can be reached at youthhoop1@gmail.com

What are the qualifications of the coaches at the camp?

Please view the "TRAINERS" section on the home page to learn about the outstanding experience and credentials of the staff.

If a child is sick or injured during camp what happens?

We have a fully stocked medical kit and ice packs. The emergency contact will be called if a child is sick or injured.

Can my child bring a snack?

We will give regular drink breaks but food/snacks will not be allowed in the gym during the camp sessions due to potential allergies. Campers can bring water or other sports drinks.

How are safety issues addressed?

The expectation is for campers to never leave the gym alone, unless they have to use the restroom, and then they are to use the buddy system. Every camper that needs to use the restroom must go with another camper as a "buddy".

What is the refund policy?

Registered and paid campers who request a refund a week prior to the camp start date will get a full refund.

If a paid camper must cancel their registration within 7 days of the camp starting they will receive a full refund less a $20 fee to cover the cost of player insurance and other expenses incurred when planning on a given number of kids for a session.

After the camp session the player is registered for has begun, there are no refunds, unless there is a documented medical reason.

THERE ARE NO REFUNDS AND/OR MAKEUPS FOR MISSED SESSIONS.

Whether it's playing a full court game, working on fundamental skills during stations or having a team practice session, everyone is having fun and learning more about basketball.
